Comparing to other marine countries in Asia Pacific, Indonesia marine potential is still not optimally explored, in particular the potential of fish and aquaculture, oil and gas, and marine tourism sector. The exploration of these potentials are dependent on the availability of relevant instruments and facilities as well as skilled personnel and technology, which are limited. Realizing the strategic nature of such information and taking into account the challenges and problems to be solved in the marine sector that should be dealt with during the Seventh Five-Year Plan (REPELITA VI) and at the early part of the Second Long Term Development Scheme (PJP II), some major marine resources monitoring evaluation programs and .associated relevant technology application and development programs have been formulated to assess and develop the potentials of marine sector resources.
