The geography and topography of Indonesia has created many rural and remote areas. This condition has hindered the national rural electrification program. Photovoltaic Technology is used as an alternative source of energy in areas where electrification is a major issue. The market potential of photovoltaic technology in Indonesia becomes magnificent. The implementation of the technology ranges from Solar Home System, Photovoltaic Pumping System for drinking water, TV Repeaters, Public Health Centers, Solar Boat System and others. One highlight is the implementation of photovoltaic technology on the productive side. Photovoltaic systems (Solar Boat Systems) are installed for lighting in fishing boats. Solar Boat Systems have proven to increase productivity and to decrease operational cost. The system promises huge market potential and high rate of return. These two factors have made Solar Boat System as a good business investment. In conclusion, the use of the state of the art of outer space technology, photovoltaic, has been strongly related to the welfare of the people living in remote areas. The technology has proven to expedite the development of rural and remote areas.
