The Empirical Orthogonal Function (EOF) methods have been widely used in various studies for different disciplines, and one application for atmospheric research. The purpose of this study is to determine more specific characteristics of Outgoing Longwave Radiation (OLR) variability and its relation to rainfall that can be explained by using the EOF method. EOF is a method that can be used to recompose pentad time-series data (data of five daily) OLR in describing their variabilities. From the analysis of the EOF scores-1 and scores -2 was obtained, which indicate OLR variation over time, in which scores-1 describes the characteristics of the annual, whereas scores-2 OLR describes the fluctuations associated with the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) fluctuations. Analysis of the resulting correlation scores-1 of EOF was correlated with rainfall, with maximum values of correlation coefficients of 0.83. Other results of the EOF analysis indicated the value of the first proportion of 19.8% which illustrated the annual fluctuation of the OLR, where the opposite value occured in the North and South of the Equator, and it is possibly related to the Hadley circulation. As for the value of the second proportion of 8.7% described the existence of the phenomenon El Niño, associated with the Walker circulation.
