Abstract
Green flight issues become important topic in aviation technology. With at most 40% thermal efficiency of internal combustion engine (ICE), more efficient propulsion configurations have been sought. Electric motor (EM) provides efficiency almost 100%, less noise, no carbon produce and less weight. But it needs power sorage which usually has largest weight than the other component. Also the storage system has lower energy density than hydrocarbon fuel. To fill the gap between disadvantage of ICE and disadvantage of EM, electro hybrid propulsion could be the best solution until the storage system technology has matured. Several industries and research centers have started developing electro hybrid propulsion since a few years ago. LAPAN intends to develop hybrid propulsion not only for eco friendly reason, but also for providing safety backup in case main engine failure.
