Forest fires playʨanʨimportantʨroleʨinʨtheʨemissionʨofʨgreenhouseʨgases and aerosols affectingʨtheʨradiationʨbalanceʨinʨland cover changes. The emissionsʨfromʨburning biomass contributeʨsignificantlyʨtoʨtheʨquantityʨofʨCarbonDiokside(CO2) ʨand trace gasesʨinʨthe atmosphereʨwhichʨareʨofʨmajorʨimportanceʨforʨbothʨenvironmentalʨand global climateʨ change. Informationʨatʨcontinentalʨlevelʨonʨvegetationʨburnedʨsurfaceʨisʨaʨfundamental inputʨrequiredʨfor estimatingʨquantities ofʨbiomass burnedʨand forʨatmosphericʨchemistry modelʨwhichʨassessʨtheʨimpactsʨofʨfireʨemissionsʨonʨtheʨenvironment. Currently , conventional methods for burned area monitoring are usually inefficient and time consuming, thus not being able to process data in real time. So, to overcome the weakness of the conventional methods, the automatic processing is the better choice for burned area monitoring because it can reduce process time and achieve efficient and real-time data analysis. This study presents a new index named by “Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio Fraction” (DNBR Fraction). The proposed index are used as the default index in Automatic Burned Area Mapping software to recognize the burned area on each study area such as in Tebing Tinggi Island (Riau, Indonesia), Millstream-Chichester National Park (Western Australia), and Yosemite National Park (USA). The accuracy of the proposed index is compared for other burned area detection methods including Differenced Normalized Burn Ratio (DNBR), Normalized Burn Ratio (NBR), Global Environtment Monitoring Index (GEMI), Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI), and Soil-Adjusted Vegetation Index (SAVI). Landsat 8 imageries have been used for burned area detection on all the study areas.
